Critique of Pervezi-Quranist Methodology

Following are a few critiques and criticisms of Ghulam Ahmed Pervaiz's methodology for interpreting The Quran, also serving as critiques of similar methodologies adopted by many Quranist groups and individuals, with whom I am more familiar than with Mr Pervaiz, which is the true purpose of this post.

Javed Ahmed Ghamidi's critique of Ghulam Ahmed Pervez's method of interpreting the Quran:

Refutation of Ghulam Ahmed Pervaiz's views about Salat by Dr Israr Ahmed:

Dr Khalid Zaheer on Mr. Ghulam Ahmed Pervaiz's understanding of Qur'an:

"...while interpreting Qur an he (Pervez) seems to be employing a way of understanding Qur anic words which is unique to him: Instead of giving meanings to Qur anic vocabulary the way Arabs of those times understood, he developed a new science for understanding meanings of Qur anic words. The end result was that he understood from Qur an a message which, at least in some cases, was completely unique, unknown to anyone before him."

"Our intellect is a God-given source of guidance. Divine revelation is a guide for our intellect. The Qur anic description of the unseen realities is metaphorical. Since, we can t see those realities and there aren t any words in our vocabulary to describe their truth literally, the Qur an has used allegorical expressions (mutashabihaat; see Qur an 3:7) to do so.

We have belief in the unseen; but it s not blind. We have accepted, or we ought to ideally accept, Qur an and the prophet, alaihissalaam, on the merit of the arguments that have been presented to believe in them. Once we begin to believe in them, we start accepting whatever we learn through them from reliable sources. That process is based on our faith that we have acquired through our intellectual reasoning and spiritual experiences. Even when we don t understand intellectually some of the contents of the message we have received from the Qur an and the prophet, we accept those contents on the one hand and struggle to find the truth about their reality through intellectual reasoning on the other.

All along this journey of faith, our intellect is our guide, which does two things: It helps us in knowing the true meanings of the text of Qur an on the one hand and in reconciling it with the common sense and undeniable worldly, scientific information we already have on the other. While going through the task of reconciliation, we should never forget the fact that the text of Qur an is the final authority and all else has to adjust in the light of it. While going through this process, which is at times a difficult task, we cannot ignore the fact that our understanding of Qur an could be faulty on some occasions while on others our perception of common sense or facts of life could be incorrect. That is why reflecting upon the verses of the Qur an has to be an ongoing process for all believers.

In the process mentioned above, I have a feeling, and may Allah guide me if I am wrong, that both traditional Muslims and modernists like Pervaiz Sahib have faltered. While the traditionalists have decided that the text of the Qur an must be understood in the manner the earlier Muslims have understood it, the modernists believe that the text must conform to the understanding of the modern knowledge. We, too, may have erred in our understanding of the text, and I am sure we have erred at least on some occasions, but we are firmly committed to our stance that the Qur an is the ultimate criterion of deciding what is correct religious understanding from what is not. It is on the basis of this commitment that we are always prepared to review and revise our opinions.

The Qur an itself has to be understood on the basis of its own language, which was the language of the Arabs who spoke and wrote it immediately before and at the time when the book was being revealed. It has also got to be interpreted in the context of its own verses. ..."

"...The Qur an is a guidance for everyone and therefore its meanings should be accessible to everyone. That doesn t mean that all ordinary people can understand Qur an like scholars can do. What it means is that the method of learning the true message of Qur an is clear; anyone who wants to achieve a higher level of understanding of Qur an can do so by following that methodology."

The Forgetfulness caused by Satan

SHAITAAN / SATAN CAUSING FORGETFULNESS OF ALLAH’S REMEMBRANCE:

Chapter Al-Mujadila 58

SHAITAAN has gained mastery over them, and HAS CAUSED THEM TO REMAIN FORGETFUL of the remembrance of God. Such as these are Shaitaan's partisans: oh, verily, it is they, the partisans of Shaitaan, who will truly be the losers! (19)

IF SHAITAAN CAUSED MUHAMMAD TO FORGET:

Al-An’aam 6

And when thou seest those who engage in vain discourse concerning Our Signs, then turn thou away from them until they engage in a discourse other than that. And if SHAITAAN SHOULD CAUSE THEE TO FORGET, then sit not, after recollection, with the unjust people. (68)

SHAITAAN CAUSING YOUSUF'S COMPANION TO FORGET:

Yousef 12

O my two companions of the prison, as for one of you he will pour out wine for his lord to drink; and as for the other, he will be crucified so that the birds will eat from his head. The matter about which you inquired has been decreed.' (41)

And of the two he said to him whom he thought to be the one who would be released, 'Mention me to thy lord.' But SHAITAAN CAUSED HIM TO FORGET mentioning it to his lord, so he remained in prison for some years. (42)

SHAITAAN CAUSED THE YOUNG BOY TO FORGET:

Al-Kahf 18

And remember the time when Moses said to his young companion, 'I will not cease pursuing my course until I reach the junction of the two seas, though I may have to journey on for ages. (60)

But when they reached the place where the two seas met, THEY FORGOT THEIR FISH and it made its way into the sea going away quickly. (61)

And when they had gone beyond that place, he said to his young companion, 'Bring us our morning meal. Surely, we have suffered much fatigue on account of this journey of ours.' (62)

He replied, 'Didst thou see, when we betook ourselves to the rock for rest and I forgot the fish -- and none but SHAITAAN CAUSED ME TO FORGET to mention it to thee -- it took its way into the sea in a marvelous manner? (63)

SHAITAAN ADORNED THEIR DEEDS FOR THEM SO THEY FORGOT:

Al-An’aam 6:

Why, then, when Our punishment came upon them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts were hardened all the more and SHAITAAN ADORNED FOR THEM ALL THAT THEY DID. (43)

THEREFORE WHEN THEY FORGOT that with which they had been reminded, and We opened unto them the gates of all things, till, even as they were rejoicing in what they were given, We seized them suddenly, and lo! they were in utter despair. (44)

Messengers ask Forgiveness and Punishment for People

MESSENGERS ASK FOR ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS (MAGHFIRAT) AND PUNISHMENT (AZAAB) FOR THE PEOPLE:

MESSENGERS WHO ASKED FOR ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS FOR THE PEOPLE:

---------------------------------------------------------

MUHAMMAD ASKED ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS FOR PEOPLE

Al-Munafiqun 63/5-6:

And when it is said to them 'COME, THAT THE MESSENGER OF GOD ASK FORGIVENESS FOR YOU,' they turn their heads aside, and thou seest them holding back disdainfully while they are big with pride. (5)

For them it is equal whether thou ask forgiveness for them, or ask not forgiveness for them. God will never forgive them. Surely, God guides not the rebellious people. (6)

An-Noor 24/62:

Those alone are true believers who believe in God and His Messenger and who, when they are with him for the consideration of some matter of common concern which has brought them together, go not away until they have asked leave of him. Surely, those who ask leave of thee, it is they alone who truly believe in God and His Messenger. So, when they ask leave of thee for some urgent affair of theirs, give leave to those of them whom thou pleasest AND ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THEM OF GOD. Surely, God is Most forgiving, Merciful. (62)

An-Nisa 4/64:

And We have sent no Messenger but that he should be obeyed by the command of God. And if they had come to thee, when they had wronged their souls, and asked forgiveness of God, AND THE MESSENGER ALSO HAD ASKED FORGIVENESS FOR THEM, they would have surely found God Oft-Returning with compassion, and Merciful. (64)

At-Taubah 9/80:

ASK THOU FORGIVENESS FOR THEM, OR ASK THOU NOT FORGIVENESS FOR THEM; even if thou ask forgiveness for them seventy times, God will never forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in God and His Messenger. And God guides not the perfidious people. (80)

EESA (“JESUS”) ASKED ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS FOR THE PEOPLE:

Al-Maidah 5/118:

If Thou punish them, they are Thy servants; AND IF THOU FORGIVE THEM, Thou surely art the Mighty, the Wise.' (118)

YOUSEF (“JOSEPH”) ASKED ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS FOR HIS BROTHERS

Yousef 12/92:

He said, 'No blame shall lie on you this day; MAY GOD FORGIVE YOU! And He is the Most Merciful of those Who show mercy. (92)

YAQOOB (“JACOB”) ASKED ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS FOR HIS SONS

Yousef 12/97-98:

They said, 'O our father, ASK OF GOD FORGIVENESS OF OUR SINS FOR US; we have indeed been sinners.' (97)

He said, 'I WILL CERTAINLY ASK FORGIVENESS FOR YOU OF MY LORD. Surely He is the Most Forgiving, the Merciful. (98)

IBRAHIM (ABRAHAM) ASKED ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS FOR HIS PARENTS AND THE BELIEVERS:

Ibrahim 14/41:

Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the day when the reckoning will take place.' (41)

IBRAHIM ASKED ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS FOR HIS FATHER:

Al-Mumtahina 60/4:

Indeed there is a good example for you in Abraham and those who were with him when they said to their people, 'We have nothing to do with you and with that which you worship beside God. We disbelieve all that you believe in. There has become manifest enmity and hatred between us and you for ever, until you believe in God alone' -- except that Abraham said to his father, 'I WILL SURELY ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THEE, though I have no power to do aught for thee against God.' Their prayer was: 'Our Lord, in thee do we put our trust and to thee do we turn in repentance, and towards thee is the final return; (4)

At-Taubah 9/114:

And IBRAHIM ASKING FORGIVENESS FOR HIS FATHER was only because of a promise he has made to him, but when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of God, he dissociated himself from him. Surely, Abraham was most tender-hearted and forbearing. (114)

IBRAHIM ASKED ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS AND MERCY FOR THOSE WHO WOULD DISOBEY HIM:

Ibrahim 14/36:

My Lord, they have indeed confused/misguided many among mankind. So whoever follows me, he is certainly of me; and whoever disobeys me, SURELY YOU ARE FORGIVING, MERCIFUL

NUH (“NOAH”) ASKED FOR ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS FOR HIS PARENTS AND THE BELIEVERS

Nuh 71 / 26-28 :

My Lord! Forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house believing, and the believing men and the believing women. And do not increase the wrong-doers in anything except destruction! (28)

ANGELS ASK FOR ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS FOR THOSE ON EARTH:

Ash-Shura 42/5:

The skies are nearly torn apart from above; and the angels proclaim the praises of their Lord AND ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THOSE ON EARTH. Behold! it is, surely, God Who is the Most Forgiving, the Merciful. (5)

ANGELS ASK ALLAH’S FORGIVENESS FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE:

Ghafir 40/7:

Those who bear the Throne and those who are around it, proclaim the praise of their Lord and believe in Him, AND ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE, saying, 'Our Lord, Thou dost comprehend all things in Thy mercy and knowledge. So forgive those who repent and follow Thy way, and protect them from the punishment of Hell; (7)

Our Lord, make them enter the Gardens of Eternity which Thou hast promised them, as well as such of their fathers and their wives and their children as are virtuous. Surely, Thou art the Mighty, the Wise; (8)

ُ
And guard them against evils; and he whom Thou dost guard against evils on that day -- him hast Thou, surely, shown mercy. And that, indeed, is the mighty triumph.' (9)

---------------------------------------------------------------

MESSENGERS ALSO CALL FOR ALLAH’S PUNISHMENT / AZAAB UPON THE PEOPLE

ALLAH'S MESSENGERS ALWAYS PREVAIL:

Al-Mujadila 58 / 20-21:

Certainly those who oppose God and His messenger are among the most abject. (20)

God has decreed: "Indeed, I will overcome! Me and My messengers!": Certainly, God is strong, powerful. (21)

As-Saafaat 37 / 171-173 :

And Our word has indeed gone forth for Our servants, the Messengers, (171)

that, certainly, they – they indeed– would be helped, (172)

and that, certainly, Our hosts – they indeed– would be those who overcome! (173)

MESSENGERS WHO CALLED FOR ALLAH’S PUNISHMENT / AZAAB UPON THE PEOPLE

NUH’S CALL FOR PUNISHMENT:

Al-Qamar 54 / 10-16:

Therefore he (Nuh / Noah) called out to his Lord, "SURELY I HAVE BEEN OVERCOME! SO HELP ME!" (10)

Therefore We opened the gates of the sky with water which fell in torrents; (11)

And We caused the earth to burst forth with springs, so the two waters met for a purpose that was decreed. (12)

And We carried him upon that which was made of planks and nails. (13)

It floated on under Our eyes; a reward for him (the messenger) who had been rejected. (14)

And surely We left it as a sign. But is there anyone who would take heed? (15)

How then was MY PUNISHMENT and My warning! (16)

Nuh 71 / 26-28 :

And Nuh said: MY LORD! LEAVE NOT UPON THE LAND ANY DWELLER FROM AMONG THE REJECTORS. (26)

For surely if You leave them they will lead astray Your servants, and will not beget any but immoral, ungrateful (children) (27)

My Lord! Forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house believing, and the believing men and the believing women. AND DO NOT INCREASE THE WRONG-DOERS IN ANYTHING EXCEPT DESTRUCTION! (28)

MUSA’S (“MOSES”) CALL FOR PUNISHMENT:

Yunus 10 / 88-90 :

And Moses said, 'Our Lord, You have bestowed upon Pharaoh and his chiefs splendour and riches in the present life, with the result, our Lord, that they are leading men astray from Your path. OUR LORD! DESTROY THEIR RICHES AND HARDEN THEIR HEARTS SO THAT THEY BELIEVE NOT UNTIL THEY SEE THE GRIEVOUS PUNISHMENT.' (88)

God said, 'Your prayer is accepted. So you both be steadfast, and follow not the path of those who know not.' (89)

And We brought the children of Israel across the sea; and Pharaoh and his hosts pursued them wrongfully and aggressively, till when the calamity of drowning overtook him, he cried, 'I believe that there is no god but He in Whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of those who submit to Him.' (90)

A PRAYER FROM THE QURAN

Aal-e-Imran 3/192-194:

Our Lord, we have heard A CRIER CALLING US UNTO FAITH, saying, 'Believe ye in your Lord,' and we have believed. OUR LORD, FORGIVE US, THEREFORE, our sins and remit from us our evils and in death join us with the righteous; (193)

Our Lord, GIVE US WHAT THOU HAST PROMISED TO US THROUGH THY MESSENGERS; and disgrace us not on the Day of Resurrection. Surely, Thou breakest not Thy promise. (194

Wahi Other Than The Quran For People Other Than Messengers

So when you read The Quran, you shall seek refuge with God from Satan the Stoned.
(The Quran 16/98)

At least two out of the three modes of Divine communication to man involves WAHI, the so-called INSPIRATION:

Ash-Shoora 42/51: And it is not for a man that God should speak to him except (1) by WAHI / INSPIRATION, or (2) from behind a veil, or (3) by sending a messenger to INSPIRE with His permission what He pleases. Surely, He is High, Wise. (51)
THE QURAN IS THE WAHI/INSPIRATION TO WARN PEOPLE WITH:

Al-An'aam 6/19: Say: What thing is the weightiest in testimony? Say: Allah is witness between you and me; and THIS QURAN has been INSPIRED towards me so that WITH IT I may WARN you and whomsoever it reaches. Do you really bear witness that there are other gods with God? Say: I do not bear witness. Say: He is only one God, and surely I am clear of that which you set up (with Him). (19)
But THERE IS WAHI OTHER THAN THE QURAN. And PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT PROPHETS OR MESSENGERS ALSO RECEIVE WAHI:

MUSA’S MOTHER RECEIVED WAHI:

Al-Qasas 28/7: And We INSPIRED towards MUSA'S MOTHER, saying: Give him suck, then when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear nor grieve; surely We will bring him back to you and make him one of the messengers.
THE DISCIPLES (OF JESUS) RECEIVED WAHI:

Al-Maida 5/111: And remember My favour when I INSPIRED TOWARDS the disciples saying, 'Believe in Me and My Messenger,' they said, 'We believe and bear Thou witness that we have submitted.' (111)
MARYAM RECEIVED WAHI THROUGH A MESSENGER (AS PER 42/51) :

Maryam 19/19: [The angel] answered: "I am but a messenger of thy Sustainer, [who says,] `I shall bestow upon thee the gift of a son endowed with purity.'" (19)
IBRAHIM’S WIFE RECEIVED WAHI THROUGH MESSENGERS (AS PER 42/51) :

Az-Zariyat 51/29-30:
Thereupon his wife approached [the guests/messengers] with a loud cry, and struck her face [in astonishment] and exclaimed: "A barren old woman [like me]!" (29)
They (the messengers) answered: "Thus has thy Sustainer decreed; and, verily, He alone is truly wise, all-knowing!" (30)

THE BEE RECEIVED DIVINE WAHI:

An-Nahl 16/68: And your Lord INSPIRED towards THE BEE saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build.
THE EARTH WILL RECEIVE DIVINE WAHI:
Az-Zalzalah 99/1-5:
When the earth is shaken to its (utmost) convulsion, (1)And the earth throws up its burdens (from within), (2)And man cries (distressed): 'What is the matter with it?'- (3)On that Day will it declare its tidings: (4)Because your Lord INSPIRED TO IT. (5)

PEOPLE WHO LIE ABOUT RECEIVING DIVINE WAHI / INSPIRATION:
Al-An'aam 6/93: And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against God, or says, 'It has been INSPIRED to me,' while nothing has been INSPIRED to him; and who says, 'I will sent down the like of that which God has sent down?' And if thou couldst only see, when the wrongdoers are in the agonies of death, and the angels stretch forth their hands, saying, 'Yield up your souls. This day shall you be awarded the punishment of disgrace because of that which you spoke against God falsely and because you turned away from His Signs with disdain.' (93)

WAHI FROM OTHER THAN GOD:

ZAKARIYA INSPIRED WITHOUT SPEAKING:
Maryam 19/10-11:
Zachariah said, 'My Lord appoint for me a commandment.' God said, 'The commandment for thee is that thou shalt not speak to the people for three successive days and nights.' (10)
So Zakariya came out to his people from him chamber: He INSPIRED TOWARDS THEM to celebrate Allah's praises in the morning and in the evening. (11)

SHAYATEEN INSPIRE FANCY SPEECH TOWARDS EACH OTHER:

Al-An'aam 6/113: The Quran 6/113: And thus we have made for every prophet enemies from among the HUMAN SHAYATEEN AND THE JINN SHAYATEEN, who INSPIRE TOWARDS EACH OTHER fancy speech in order to deceive.  Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their inventions.
SHAYATEEN INSPIRE TOWARDS THEIR AWLIYA / FRIENDS:
Al-An'aam 6/121: And eat not of that on which the name of God has not been pronounced, for surely that is abomination. And certainly THE SHAYATEEN INSPIRE TOWARDS THEIR FRIENDS with such thoughts that they may dispute with you. And if you obey them, you will indeed be of those who set up gods with God. (121)

Zina / Adultery

Salaam alaikum,

If we pay close attention to the context of 24/2(the verse ordaining punishment for the az-zina), we realize that for az-zina to occur, az-zaani can be any man, "married" or not, but az-zaaniya must be a "married" woman:

Verse 24/4 talks about those who accuse al-muhsanaat of committing az-zina:

24/4: And those who accuse al-muhsanaat, then do not bring four witnesses, therefore you shall lash them eighty lashes,....
Al-muhsanaat is a category of women, coming from the root Ha-Saad-Nun, meaning secured, reserved, immune, fortified/impenetrable, inaccessible etc. According to verse 4/25, a woman is made muhsana through nikah/"marriage". That is, a Muhsana is a "married" woman.

Then again, in 24/6 it talks about husbands accusing their wives(i.e. women "married" to them):
24/6: And those who accuse their azwaaj, and have no witnesses for them except themselves,....
Both verses are about the accusation of women, and more importantly married women, and not about men. Why not about men? Because the man's role was secondary; the act could not have been az-zina, had the woman not been "married". Az-zina, therefore, is a polyandrous act.

I think this is why verse 24/2 mentions the zaainya first and the zaani second, as it could not have been az-zina without the polyandrous woman. Everywhere else that I can remember, the man is always mentioned first, and the woman second.(Except in the case of al-fahisha in 4/15-16 where the women are also mentioned first)

Even in the story of Yusuf, the woman who tried to force herself on him was married. Zina therefore, being a polyandrous act, betrays the trust of the husband, (which of course she was unsuccessful at):
12/52, "...I have not akhnu-hu/betrayed him in the absence",
(...she said referring to her husband.)

Therefore the punishment of az-zina is for the act of committing and assisting polyandry, i.e. for the woman betraying her husband, and for the man "accessing" the woman reserved for her husband.
